How To: Install Your Reflex Racing MR-03 Front Suspension

Recently we released our new front suspension parts for the MR-03. We are glad to say that these parts are already our all-time best selling product, and it only has been a little over 3 weeks since they came to market!!!

With that, a lot of questions have arised as to which is the best way to install them. Over the next images presented here is the way that we set-up our Team Cars with a "Starting Set-Up".

First, start off with a fully disassembled front suspension. Install the Titanium Nitride Coated Extra Long King Pin where the original Kyosho one was.

Next, slide over your knuckle over the King Pin. In this case, we are using PN's Lowering Knuckles. These knuckles help us lower the front end of the car about 0.7mm witout having to place shims under the knuckle. This allows us to lower the front end, and keep the original suspension Geometry. If you are using the stock plastic units, use about 0.7-0.8mm worth of washers underneath the knuckle. This will lower your roll center though, so you may need to use a slightly stiffer front spring in order to maintain the same roll stiffness on your front suspension.

Re-install the upper arm. Note that we have already replaced the upper suspension pivot ball with our Ultra-Smooth Delrin Balls. These really make a huge difference in your suspension smoothness.

Next, use a Reflex Racing M2 washer and slide it over the king pin so that it sits on the delrin ball. Contrary to popular belief, these will not bind your front suspension. The washers are slightly oversized so they should not even touch the kingpin once you install the spring. The slightly bigger diameter allows for the washer to "center" on the pivot ball and this keeps it from moving around.

Our starting set-up uses the PN Racing White Lowdown Spring. Slide it over the king pin.

Next, install a 4.0mm Spring Cup with a 0.4mm pre-load Spring Washer. This is about the right amount of internal pre-load on this set-up.

Now, at the top, install 2 more Reflex M2 Washers, this adds a little extra pre-load on the front suspension and at the same time limits the suspension up-stroke a little bit more vs. installing it internal. This is what we call "external pre-load" and it is one of our favorite features about this front suspension. You can't achieve this with the stock set-up!!! ;)

Lastly, just clip your plastic c-clip back in place. Repeat on the other side and you should be done!

NOTES:

-The MR-03 is very sensitive to suspension stroke adjustments. People often overlook this setting, but we have found it to be so valuable!. With a standard suspension you can't adjust this easily! Try playing around with suspension stroke in order to adjust your middle and exit steering so you can find that sweet spot in the steering you are looking for. More suspension stroke (either by using a shorter spring cup or moving the external pre-load to internal pre-load ) should increase your middle and exit of a corner steering. Likewise, less suspension stroke should give you more push in the middle and exit of a corner.

-Eventhough the parts should work really smooth, sometimes some junk can get in the suspension and bind it up a bit, especially with the PN knuckles. We recommentd to use a little bit of Kyosho flourine King Pin oil on the Pins and knuckles. We also recommend to clean your suspension after every race day.

-Try dampening your front end! I always carry a couple of bottles of Kyosho Diff Gear Grease (3000wt and 5000wt), typically I start with 5000 wt. at most tracks. This allows the suspension to become more precise, reducing the bounciness of the car. Having a front suspension that absorbs bumps will keep a better tire contact patch through out the track, yielding a more stable car, that also has more steering.
