How To: Remove anodization from your aluminum parts

If you are like me, you love silver aluminum parts. Many people ask me how I own silver Kyosho AWD Gear covers and motor mounts, as well as my WTF, etc. I always kid around saying that they are prototypes, sometimes they are, but most of the time, I'm just pulling their leg...

The next tutorial illustrates very easily how to remove anodizing from your aluminum parts in a couple of very simple steps. Know that anodizing is actually also a protective, hardeing color coat that protects your alloy parts from getting scratched and bent as easily. Anodizing also prolongs wear of these parts, so avoid remocing it from moving parts that have a lot of friction such as the 3Racing AWD knuckles, or you will see premature wear.

This is real easy, and you need very few things to make it happen. Easy off is the secret ingredient to remove the anodizing. Make sure that you pick up some thick latex gloves though, this stuff is nasty and will eat through your skin!!!

You will also need a bottle or a jar to fill up with the easy off and dip the aluminum part in, as well as a toothbrush to do a little scrubbing.

Spray a good amount of easy off inside your can/ bottlle where you are going to soak the aluminum part.

Dip your aluminum part into the Easy-off and let soak for a minute or so, shake vigorously a couple of times to remove most of the anodizing. Don't leave the aluminum in the easy off for too long because once the anodizig is gone, the easy off will start attacking the aluminum and damage it. Easy off is NASTY stuff!!!

Use the tothbrush to get to the hard-to-reach corners, make sure that you are wearing gloves at all times!!!

Rinse off the part and bam! You have a beautiful silver aluminum piece for your AWD. It is important to know that sometimes parts will not come out very shiny. All it takes is a dremel with a polishing wheel and some polishing compound to bring that shine out of your aluminum parts!
